This chapter examines the early life of Georges Barrère during the period from 1876 to 1893. On October 31, 1876 Barrère was at the Bordeaux region in France. He participated in the Bataillon Scolaire as a fifer in 1889 and went to the Paris Conservatoire in 1889 under Léon Richaud. His progress at the Conservatoire was so slow that he was given the lowest possible prize at the June 1892 examination. When he came to back to school in the fall of 1893 after the vacation, he was introduced to their new professor, Claude Paul Taffanel who would be influential in his successful career as a flutist.
