In the 17th century, John Wilkins and Bernard Fontenelle discussed space travel and the nature of extraterrestrial life in book-length studies. In 1697, Christiaan Huygens published Kosmotheoros, an extended work on planetary life and civilization. All three men used maritime analogies in describing planetary exploration. The modern American space program (NASA) continues to draw upon similar analogies when discussing space and space travel.
