This chapter examines the history and repertoire of the classical mandolin during the period from 1878 to 1892. The Paris Exhibition of 1878 in France was instrumental in popularizing the mandolin because it was during this event that a growing number of Italian mandolinists performed successfully in front of the French audience. This chapter traces the influence of Spanish bandurria players on the mandolin repertoire and analyses the circoli mandolinists in Italy. Some of the most notable mandolinists during this period include Giuseppe Silvestri, Carlo Munier, and Silvio Ranieri.
