This chapter examines the history and repertoire of the classical mandolin during the period from 1892 to 1918. It explains that this period represents the development of the virtuoso era and traces the growth of the popularity of the mandolin in different countries including Italy, Britain, France, Belgium, the U.S., Japan, and South America. During this period, the mandolin was played in considerable numbers in virtually every country which Western culture had permeated, and though the bands and orchestras were led by Europeans, their members were usually indigenous people.
