This chapter examines the history and repertoire of the classical mandolin during the period from 1918 to 1945. It traces the emergence of the new style of playing the mandolin in Germany and Austria. During this period, the mandolin was increasingly adopted by socialists in Germany and to preserve the cultural identity of the working class, two major organizations were created. These were the Deutscher Mandolinen- und Gitarrenspieler-Bund (DMGB) and the Deutscher Arbeiter-MandolinistenBund (DAMB). In Italy, outdoor performances of the mandolin were prohibited by the Fascist government. In France, a mandolin class was established at the Conservatoire National, which continued until 1940.
