The Algerian Charter, published July 5, 1976, as the highest source for national policy and state law, was drawn up by the Front for National Liberation, the sole political party in the country.

In this piece from 1976, the Charter notes that Algeria is a Muslim society with Islam as its state religion. The major theme, however, is that only revolution, not exhortation to moral reawakening, can rescue the Muslim world from its decline. The reconstruction of Muslim thought, a noble goal, can occur only through the total refashioning of society.
