The story and setting of Tobit are reviewed. As a text circulating in Palestine in Hebrew and Aramaic two centuries before Jesus' adult ministry, this text was also in a strong position to exercise influence. The correlations between Tobit and Jesus in regard to almsgiving and love for the neighbor are particularly strong. Points of divergence, for example in the definition of kinship along blood lines and the expectations for cooperation among kin, are also explored.
