This chapter constructs typologies of healing practices within the Latino Word of Faith movement—based on strength/weakness of adherence to Kenneth E. Hagin’s teachings—to move beyond flat notions of assimilation vs. acculturation. The project categorizes specific United States congregations—members of Hagin’s RHEMA movement in Los Angeles, California, that differ in connectedness to Mexico: El Centro Christian Center and San Gabriel Valley Family Center, and Spanish-speaking Maranatha World Revival Ministries, founded by Nahum Rosario (born in Puerto Rico) in Chicago, Illinois, and headquarters for a global Latina/o denomination—as “Orthodox” Haginite, “Moderate,” or “Reformer,” using these classifications to gauge interest in maintaining, modifying, or rejecting Latina/o ethnic identity. The Faith message promised that members of marginalized communities could “activate” faith to receive health and finances, yet defined faith as individual rather than communal responsibility, raising questions about whether the Faith message is a meaningful form of liberation theology.
