This introduction provides the historical background and critical context for the Western imagination of Chinese writing, specifically the connection between this writing and technological media from the mid-nineteenth century onward. I present an outline history of the relevant ideas about China, writing, and media prior to the nineteenth century, a history that is then refunctionalized by modernism, the subject of the following chapters.
