This chapter first sets out the purpose of the book, which is to present a theological response to the feminists’ challenge to classical Christology, particularly the meaning of the cross, by means of an explicit feminist retrieval and reconstruction of a theology of the cross. It argues that a feminist theology of the cross can serve a dual purpose for feminist Christology: to show the patriarchal distortion of traditional Christology and to reveal lost dimensions in the understanding of the person and work of Jesus Christ. An overview of the subsequent chapters is presented.

Keywords: Christology; feminism; cross; theology of the cross; feminist theology
