The data in the three empirical chapters at the heart of this book come from a three-part multi-method study. This Appendix combines analysis of individual interviews, longitudinal administrative data about protection orders, welfare use, and earnings, and women’s writing and researchers’ observations and field notes from a community literacy project. These data provide the opportunity to investigate both structural connections between welfare, abuse, and earnings, on the one hand, and how women who suffer abuse and use welfare define their own situations, on the other hand. This Appendix describes each of the data sources and methodological strategies in more detail. The Appendix provides the equations, additional data arrays, and analytic details behind the longitudinal data analysis reported in Chapter 4.
