This chapter focuses on the start of Gokhale’s political career. The year 1889 marked Gokhale’s entry into the politics of Poona, and was also the last year of the administration of Lord Reay, Governor of Bombay. Gokhale’s early political career and secretaryship of the Poona Sarvajanik Sabha thus coincided with the administration of Lord Harris, who succeeded Lord Reay. Gokhale was a familiar figure on the political stage of Poona in the 1890s. As the secretary of the Sabha, it was his privilege to read out the welcome address to the distinguished visitor, to move a resolution, or to deliver a speech.
