Charlotte arrived in May 1800 as a foil for Mary Walker, but failed to impress Blechynden. She tried to improve herself and avoid drinking in order to be allowed to stay with him. However, her enforced isolation and her relative seclusion even with other bibis seem to have caused some notoriety and awkwardness. This chapter also discusses Blechynden’s conflict with a certain W.T. Jones for taking Charlotte away and Charlotte’s negotiated return to Blechynden. The constant disagreement between the couple persisted even after Charlotte’s return.
