This chapter examines Richard Blechynden’s relationship with Isabella, his last long-time bibi. Isabella was the daughter of a private soldier from Berhampore and Blechynden first met her in April 1804. This chapter discusses the trials and tribulations in their relationship and Isabella’s idleness and petulance as well as her desire for children. It shows how money was both a symptom of Isabella’s dependence on Blechynden and indicative of her separate life within the Bengal milieu.
