This chapter compares the 15 cities of Karnataka selected for this study, along the following themes: governance (organizational features, elected bodies, staffing); demographics (population, density patterns, labour force, literacy rate, social composition); economy (economic base, credit disbursed, investment flows); resources and finances (revenues, tax collections, capital expenditures); physical and commercial infrastructure (number of bank branches, road length, residential and commercial buildings transport, street lights, vehicles); education (schools and colleges); essential services (water supply, sewerage, solid waste, electricity); urban poverty (slums and access to sanitation); quality of life (air quality, water quality, recreation, lung space); and public security and safety (crimes such as murder and theft, mortalities/injuries in road accidents).
