This chapter discusses property ownership and land purchase. Between 1903 and 1925 the Saundersons were caught in a whirlwind legislative process which destroyed the seventeenth-century land settlements, fractured the family estate, and reshaped the family’s prosperity. The Conservatives' land legislation owed as much to well-established precedent as to experiment and novelty, and as much to parliamentary pressures and tactics as to coherent Unionist philosophy.
