This chapter surveys the discussion of British books, especially those that played a role in the British debate over materialism and immaterialism in the Bibliothèque raisonmée and the Bibliothèque britannique. The discussion of both journals is organized around two main topics: (1) books dealing with the nature of the soul and its relations to the body; and (2) various medical books analysing the physiology of the body, especially as that physiology relates to the correspondence between particular physiological events and mental processes or states.

Keywords: Locke; Bibliothèque raisonmée; Bibliothèque britannique; soul; body; medical books
