The puzzle consists in a conflict which emerges when we reflect in two different ways on our experience: when we reason about experience on the basis of the causal picture of experience, and when we are open to our experience. On the assumption that the conflict uncovered by philosophical reflection is real and not merely apparent, this chapter tries to explain why the conflict exists, why we are caught up in the puzzle.
