This chapter discusses the search for alternative accounts of pleasure, which are stimulated by the difficulties that were raised in Chapter 3. Two views are discussed in this chapter. The first is that people are told of the vigour and wholeheartedness of performance, and the second is that people are told of the mode of attention of the subject to what they are doing.
