This chapter explores unmixed metaphysics. It raises some general metaphysical questions that need comment before addressing the particular question of the self: questions about the nature of objects or ‘individual substances’, about the notion of the subject of experience, and about the content of any tenable version of the doctrine of materialism or physicalism. The chapter takes ‘materialism’ and ‘physicalism’ to be interchangeable in the philosophy of mind.

Keywords: physicalism; physical object; mental object; experience; materalism; object; subjectivism; unity; property
