This chapter examines the historical connection of the doctrine of consideration with the ideas developed in the medieval canon law in England. Though the existence of this connection is hardly open to doubt, it is inherently impossible to give any precise account of the connection. This is because of the absence of any direct evidence and because there was no settled doctrine of cause in either the civil or canon law.
