The first half of this chapter discusses the role of community police in major police operations, including serious disorder and major raids which occurred in the research sites. The second half examines the role community police play in the maintenance of local public order, with particular reference to relations with ethnic minority youth. While less dramatic, this latter activity has a more extensive, if more subtle, influence on the quality of life in the city.
