Pauline exegesis may be compared to the pesherite interpretation of the Qumran scrolls. While formal distinctions between the two should not be ignored, and the pesher as a genre is sui generis, they nevertheless manifest commonalities that cannot be denied. The existence of ‘Midrash pesher’, however, is based upon a dubious reading of 4Q174 and this alleged hybrid genre should, this chapter argues, be left out of a discussion of pesherite or Pauline exegeses.
