The scholars who witnessed Sīdī Mahmūd's pre-eminence and his superior virtue were those men who were distinguished in learning. Some amongst them were those who were the disciples of Shayk Muhammad b. al-Karīm al-Maghīlī. Others amongst them were those who had met him and who also had met Shayk Abū Ruways. Some had met Imām al-Suyūtī and Shayk Ahmad al-Zarrūq. These men, and other scholars like them, were the lords of the people of the ninth century of the hijra.
