This chapter explores Aristotle's views of substance in two works, the Categories and the Metaphysics. The two contrast widely in scale and treatment, the Categories being brief and deceptively simple in style, whereas the Metaphysics is long, complex, and obscure. Both raise important problems of interpretation and criticism, and each must be considered in light of the other.
