This chapter considers the use of the terms ousia and homoousios in the brief period of almost ten years which led up to the Council of Nicea in June 935. The events of this period and the Council itself present many problems which Church historians have so far failed to classify. The chapter focuses on basic theology as revealed by available texts, and particularly the contemporary sources. It suggests that ousia and possibly homoousios, had become the subject of disagreement long before the Council began.
