This chapter explores the laws of churches in the Anglican Communion that regulate the appointment, functions, and termination of the various episcopal ministries. Termination of ministry in most churches is regulated by elaborate provisions enabling retirement, voluntary resignation, and removal in extreme cases. Legal unity in the Anglican Communion can be clearly seen in the coincidence between laws of churches which reserve to the diocesan bishop a controlling jurisdictional oversight as to the governance, teaching, and liturgical life of the diocese.
