Even if Otto was not the one who discovered the category of the holy, his The Idea of the Holy emphasized the concept of holiness and thus gained much attention from both popular and academic circles. The place of this work within theistic belief, as well as the originality associated with this work, cannot be established without looking into the developments in the concept of holiness that occurred before and after Otto's study. In this chapter, we attempt to examine the history attributed to the concept of holiness within biblical criticism and theology in the twentieth century, while focusing more on the theistic dynamics observed in Otto's work and on the development of the notion of comparative religion or the science of religion.
