This introductory chapter explains the coverage of this book, which is about the ascetics and ambassadors of Christ in the monasteries of Palestine during the period from 314 to 631. This book is devoted to Palestinian monasticism and it consists of three major parts. The first discusses the main sources of information about the monasteries, the second describes the environment in which the monasteries grew and developed their distinctive characters, the last part explores the activities and achievements of the monks themselves.
