This introductory chapter explains the objective of the book, which is to examine the religious and regional history of Northern Italy under the Roman Empire, and the origins and development of Christianity during the later part of the 4th century. It demonstrates the unreliability of many of the traditional sources and proposes a new methodology that locates the development of the Church in the context of what the author terms the north Italian human environment. It also attempts to clarify the cultural and social context of the development of Christianity in northern Italy, and to reconcile ecclesiastical and social history.
