This chapter examines the references to ‘wise men’ and asks whether they are indeed references to a single class. If so, is this class associated with the state administration, and does this description itself imply some connection with the wisdom literature? It is argued that the use of ‘wise’ in the Old Testament cannot be used to determine the setting of the tradition represented in the wisdom literature because it shows no particular connection with the literary tradition.
