The very existence of written documents indicates that some sort of education must have been available in Israel. Pointing to the systems of other, larger nations, some scholars believe that formal schooling existed, at least in the administrative class, from a relatively early time. This chapter reviews the evidence for schools. It argues that there is neither any strong evidence for schools nor any convincing reason to suppose that they would have existed.
