The period covered by this book ends with a potentially destructive crisis in Anglo-American relations, just as the scene had been set for its opening by the rift over Suez. Paradoxically, in both cases, the weathering of the crises gave rise to a new degree of intimacy in the nuclear relationship. This chapter reviews the events surrounding the confrontation over Skybolt cancellation. This, in turn, sets the scene for the ensuing meeting between Kennedy and Macmillan at Nassau, issuing in American agreement to sell Polaris missiles to the United Kingdom.
