This chapter presents annual data for Australia on the national sales of all types of tobacco products for the years 1920–1995. Both manufactured and hand-rolled cigarettes are considered, as well as pipes and cigars. These data are also presented on a per-adult basis. Smokeless tobacco products are negligible. The transition from plain to filter and to lower tar cigarettes is documented. Survey-based data are presented on the sex- and age-specific prevalence of smoking from 1945, and on amount smoked from 1968. The data shown are mainly nationally based, supplemented by relevant data from international studies. Surveys of adolescents and adults are included. Appropriate attention is given to the varying definitions and methodologies of the source material, while presenting data in a consistent format. Summary estimates for all adults are presented. Sources of data are fully cited.
