This chapter first discusses linear and quadratic electro-optic effects in semiconductors using an oscillator model. The Franz–Kledysh effect is then discussed first by neglecting electron-hole interactions. The electrorefraction effect and its role in intensity and phase modulation is illustrated. Finally, modulation spectroscopy is briefly discussed. Exercises are provided at the end of the chapter.
