This chapter explores how holograms were perceived in wider culture. From the mid 1960s, holograms were touted as futuristic and awe-inspiring by firms hoping to inspire purchasers or investors. From the 1970s, commercial holograms explored eroticism and pornography, art for the home, and advertising, but during the 1980s descended to kitsch. For the general public, the vision of holography was one of a constantly progressing field in which holographic cinema and television were inevitable and just around the corner. Different audiences characterised the hologram as emblematic of spiritual values, as a science-fiction technology, or as a mere engineering tool.
