The positive ion mobility in normal liquid 3He at low temperatures has long puzzled researchers because of its hysteretic behavior, until it was discovered that the ion structure induced by electrostriction depends on the isotopic composition of the liquid. Thermodynamic calculations show that the size of the positive ion radius varies depending on the amount of 4He impurities in the liquid. The puzzling hysteretic behavior has thus been attributed to the presence of ions of different radii.
