This chapter demonstrates that electrophysiological measures are helpful in advancing psychological theories on recognition memory beyond implications derived from behavioural, neuroimaging, animal, or neuropsychological studies and, therefore, can contribute to the validation of contemporary models of episodic memory. It presents studies suggesting that familiarity and recollection can be mapped onto distinct aspects of event-related brain potentials (ERPs) recorded during the retrieval phase of recognition memory tasks. The basic logic of the ERP approach is that if familiarity and recollection are distinct cognitive processes, they should also have qualitatively distinct ERP correlates.
