This chapter is the first of three (Chapters 5–7) which deal at length with the individual Neo-Hittite kingdoms and the kings and royal dynasties which held sway over them. Chapter 5 deals with the four Neo-Hittite kingdoms located in the Euphrates region—Carchemish, Malatya, Kummuh, and Masuwari (Til Barsip). The discussion of each kingdom begins with an account of what is known of its history, followed by treatments of each of its known kings. The written sources on which our information about them is based are listed at the beginning of each treatment. Assyrian and Luwian sources figure prominently amongst these, but there are other sources (e.g. Aramaean and Old Testament) as well. A summary of all the Neo-Hittite rulers and the sources relating to them is provided in Appendix II. Note that Chapters 5–7 are intended to serve primarily as reference sources rather than for general reading.
