This chapter examines contextual and critical scholarship on EU law. It argues that the Union's diversity and current state of development perhaps make it unlikely that EU law scholarship will travel quite as far down the same path as American legal scholarship. Of particular importance is the range of legal families represented in the European Union, especially the influence of the civil law systems.
