This chapter discusses several influential syntactic approaches to sentential stress, namely Cinque (1993) (as well as Legate's (2003) revision of his original proposal) and Zubizarreta (1998). It is shown that even though these approaches have an advantage over phonological approaches in that they do not suffer from the overgeneration problem, they face other conceptual and empirical difficulties.
