This chapter chronicles the evolution of the leaf, the essential organ of terrestrial carbon cycling. Homology between phyllidia, microphylls, and megaphylls is discussed, and leaf evolution is placed within the context of the evolution of leaf developmental networks including the ARP/KNOX regulatory module. The enormous variety of forms adopted by leaves (spines, tendrils, ascidia etc) is surveyed in a morphological and molecular context. The determination of leaf shape, lobing, marginal toothing and compound leaf form is also treated.
