This chapter analyses the macroeconomic effects of HIV/AIDS and of the proposed large scale anti-retroviral treatment (ART) programme in South Africa, and considers the prognosis for the future. Although the impact of HIV/AIDS on a country's economic performance is likely to be adverse, the extent of these economic costs is difficult to determine with any reasonable degree of certainty. Moreover, although a large-scale ART programme should be beneficial to the HIV-positive members of society and their close relations, it is not necessarily the case that it would be economically beneficial.
