This chapter outlines the free will problem, and explains why this book will tackle a rather non-standard version of the questions generally asked under the ‘free will’ head. It outlines the libertarian position for which the book will argue—that agency itself is incompatible with determinism, a position dubbed ‘Agency Incompatibilism’. It also provides a general introduction to the distinctive claim of the book that the agency of many non-human animals is just as difficult to square with determinism as is our own.
