This brief chapter describes the unexpected change in the couple's life, resulting from a different request. After pressure from his family, Jean-Marie seeks unsuccessfuly to get recognition of noble status, based both on quasi-noble forebears and for services rendered. His wife, negotiating for him in Paris, fails too, but ingeniously obtains a posting for him to the Lyon region. The episode, and its repercussions, including Roland's superiors’ opinions of him, are discussed.
