In this chapter, an explanation of fundamental processes in silver halide (AgX) photographic materials is followed by the description of various aspects of photographic science, including the outline of progress in photographic science, and the community and organization for photographic science. AgX photography has a long history of about 170 years, and has been supported by photographic science with its international congresses, which have been held nearly every four years for about 120 years. It is noted that color film is composed of more than 10 layers with different functions in pile, and contains more than 100 different functional compounds and well-designed silver halide grains.
