An edited version of her wartime diaries Nella Last's War: A mother's diary was first published in 1981, and republished in 2006, following an acclaimed TV drama based on the diaries. While motherhood and housewifery were both central to her identity, she was also a woman engaged in the public sphere, a sometime Conservative Party activist and a wartime voluntary worker.
