This chapter reports the fundamentals of Chinese history. In particular, it reviews in brief terms the aspects of Chinese history with a bearing on the evolution of its present-day business systems. This means paying attention to the socioeconomic dimension of that history rather than to other dimensions such as the arts, or the details of politics. It then considers in broad terms the implications of this legacy for the culture and institutions of China's present-day business world. In addition, the certain key elements in the traditional formula used by China to run its economy and society are described. It also considers the resulting legacies of that history for the present day. Moreover, the challenge of modernization is shown.
