This chapter discusses at length the quantum gravitational aspects of string theory. After a general introduction which includes the emergence of the graviton for the free string, the Polyakov path integral is presented and effective Einstein equations with string corrections are obtained from an effective action. Most of the discussion is done for the bosonic string, but the chapter also contains sufficient material on the superstring. In addition, the chapter contains sections on black-hole entropy from string theory and brane worlds, on the formation of black holes in accelerators, and on string field theory.
