Chapter 1 introduces the map of the global stock market, demonstrating that its development is a quintessential part of economic integration and globalization. It starts with an outline of the history of stock markets, and then focuses on their unprecedented growth in the last two decades. Data and novel measures are used to show that the development of stock markets is highly uneven, and far from finished. There remains a large potential for future growth, even in the most developed markets. Existing explanations of stock market development are shown as insufficient, ignoring the spatial nature of stock market processes, and focusing too narrowly on the national scale of analysis. The chapter finishes with a summary of controversies surrounding the role of stock markets in economy and society and a roadmap for the rest of the book.
